Members of the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems, and the Michigan Department of Education hosted a series of discussions with eight participating farmers in the program to understand their unique stories and experiences. This publication shares key needs and themes from the farmer discussions which include:
- Farmers need funds to scale up their businesses to better serve 10 Cents a Meal grantees.
- It takes a significant time to build relationships and connect to 10 Cents a Meal grantees.
- It takes a significant time to support the education of 10 Cents a Meal to purchase and serve local foods.
- There are regional influences on the infrastructure needs of farmers.
- There is a desire for more collaboration with farmers, including across sectors.
