Earth Day Virtual Farm Tour

Earth Day Virtual Farm Tour – April 20, 2021 @ 10:00 a.m.

Join Milk Means More at Weber Family Dairy Farm on a free virtual field trip to learn how dairy farmers focus on Earth Day every day. During the 45 minute tour, Farmer James Weber will discuss how he works each day on regenerative practices including responsibly composting, applying nutrients to the soil and keeping surrounding water clean. You will see how James cares for the calves, cows, land, and community. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions during the live tour. The tour is open to all ages and will target students in 3^{rd –} 5^th grades. Teachers can register to join the tour through Zoom and will receive updates and reminders.

Join the CRFS team! The Farm to Institution Fellow will play an important role supporting and advancing collaboration in Michigan's farm to institution programs. We are seeking a self-motivated, resourceful, and committed early-career candidate to bring creative vision to an existing, strong foundation of relationships, programs, and learnings to support and shape farm to institution programs in Michigan. Our farm to institution work is highly collaborative. This position will work closely with the CRFS senior farm to institution specialist to collaborate with partners from state agencies, MSU Extension, community-based organizations, institutions, potential funding agencies, and national partners. The person in this role will support outreach, research, and project coordination for ongoing farm to institution projects, including: Michigan Farm to Institution Network, Michigan Farm to School, Cultivate Michigan, 10 Cents a Meal, and An Anchor Innovations project to support Michigan hospitals and healthcare systems implement local food procurement. This ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in community food systems, public health, nutrition, community development, food policy, or a related field and at least two years of work experience in a professional or academic setting. News Cook-off Among Fifth Graders Showcases Farm to School A group of fifth graders in Ishpeming, Michigan learned how to operate a farm stand and participated in a school cook-off showcasing their culinary skills as part of a farm to school event. Changes in Food Production During the Pandemic Many farms, food producers, restaurants, and retailers shifted to accommodate new health and safety guidelines during the pandemic. This article notes that many businesses have noticed more demand for local foods, and how programs like 10 Cents a Meal are incentivizing local food purchasing. Read more. USDA Extends School Meal Flexibilities through September 2021 In early March, USDA extended school nutrition flexibilities for the School Breakfast Program (SBP), National School Lunch Program (NSLP), and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) through September 30, 2021. This includes allowing children to be safely served meals outside of group settings, meal pick up by parents/guardians, and non-standard serving of meals, including grab-and-go and bulk pick up options.
