CRFS Farm to Institution survey summaries

Since 2004, the Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems has conducted six surveys to understand the landscape of Farm to Institution efforts in Michigan.  A new synthesis brings together this research to summarize what is currently understood about local food purchasing by institutions and about the producers who sell to them, what is still unknown and what next steps are being taken in the research.

See the synthesis and find individual survey summaries at http://foodsystems.msu.edu/activities/farm-to-school

Read the related press release, Michigan Institutions Expand Local Food Purchasing, website at http://foodsystems.msu.edu/news/stories/read/fti-summary-release

Please feel free to share widely!

Traverse City Area Public Schools Seeks Food Service Director with Farm to School Skills

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) in northwestern Lower Michigan is taking applications for a new food service director for its approximately 10,000-student school system. TCAPS' job description includes making farm to school purchasing—purchasing and serving food grown by local farmers—a priority. All food service programming also must be financially sustainable.

TCAPS is located in a diverse agricultural region of Michigan and is working with numerous community partners to help build the region's local food economy and to bring healthy, locally grown foods to the plates of its students. The duties within its job description include:

  • Oversee the implementation of Farm-to School model by finding innovative ways to keep the school lunch program supplied with fresh, seasonal, sustainably grown produce and products, by building positive partnerships
  • Oversee menu planning consistent with state and federal guidelines with an emphasis on the use of seasonal, regional, and sustainable food products.
  • Use seasonal, regional, and sustainably produced food products, to the greatest degree possible, with an emphasis on foods prepared from scratch in district.

Please spread the word. Go here for more information and to fill out the application: http://www.tcaps.net/HumanResourcesEmployment/JOBSOnlineApplication/tabid/1983/Default.aspx

Please note that I have a new office phone number. Thank you!
