Subject: [NFSN Partners] Applications Open: NFSN Farm to School Coordinators Project

Greetings!

National Farm to School Network is excited to convene the Farm to School Coordinators Project, which includes a Farm to School Coordinators Community of Practice (CoP) for current individuals doing farm to school work at a school district and a School District Working Group (WG) for school districts who don't yet have a farm to school coordinator but want to work towards hiring one.

The CoP will be a two-year collaborative space for eight farm to school coordinators meeting 12 times where members will engage in peer-learning and co-develop strategies to navigate farm to school implementation and bring learnings back to their work.

The WG will consist of a two-year cohort of 10 individuals from different school districts. They will meet eight times with the intent to build the case for farm to school for their school district as well as others across the country. The WG will work together with the goal of creating a farm to school coordinator position at their school district. They will also help in the creation of resources that will be shared with other school districts also trying to create a farm to school coordinator position.

Learn more and apply here (and check out the accompanying blog here)  Deadline to apply is October 13.

Grant Opportunity through Rooted in Justice

Hi all,

Please share this grant opportunity, Rooted in Justice for $20,000-$25,000 per year for two years. I am not involved with this organization, contact: rootedinjustice@cedartreefoundation.org with questions.

The Cedar Tree Foundation is excited to announce a new round of grantmaking for "Rooted in Justice" a funding program designed to help amplify youth voices and actions in the environmental and food justice movements. We support community-based organizations and groups that specifically manage youth-led urban greening programs.

Rooted in Justice recognizes the importance and undeniable right of every young person to have the ability to develop their own relationship with the environment, be it through growing food, spending time with nature, creating community green spaces, or becoming environmental stewards. Rooted in Justice also honors the power and possibilities that arise when young people collectively work to be change-makers in their communities.

Rooted in Justice supports organizations, groups, collectives, and programs that work with young people between the ages of 12 to 20 in youth-led programming for communities or cultures which have historically or currently experience:

  • A lack of access to land or nature;

  • Agricultural oppression and/or neglect;

  • Food apartheid; and/or

  • Other forms of injustice based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics and disability.

Started in 2021, Rooted in Justice awards annual grants to a small cohort of organizations recommended to the Cedar Tree Board through an open RFP. Proposals are reviewed and selected by a panel with a majority of BIPOC leaders through a participatory grantmaking process.

Good Afternoon!

Thank you for your support of the Michigan Healthy School Meals For All campaign. We have exciting and timely updates to share.

As you may have seen, SB 500 has been introduced, which would create a permanent Healthy School Meals for All program!

In addition, the Senate Education Committee has announced that they will host a hearing on the bill TOMORROW Tuesday, September 19th, at 1:30pm. The American Heart Association, SNA Michigan, and No Kid Hungry Michigan have been invited to testify in favor of the bill. We expect a committee vote to happen in the next week.

It is more important than ever to have your voice heard. We are asking coalition members to submit WRITTEN testimony in support of SB 500 by the start of the hearing.

To aid in this process, we have prepared model testimony that can be used by students, parents, organizations, and others. Instructions for submission are included. Please see the attached for draft testimony and instructions to submit.

Again, we are asking members of the coalition to submit written testimony by 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, using the instructions and model outlined in the attachment.

Thank you all for your partnership and commitment to Michigan Healthy School Meals For All! We will continue to keep you updated through the hearing and in days ahead.

For more information or questions regarding this campaign, please contact us at Collin.McDonough@heart.org and bdowney@strength.org.
