FW: MI Good Food Charter Council Spring Policy Action Forum Seeks Leadership Team - due 11/3

Hello again all,

This is just a reminder that MSU CRFS and the Michigan Good Food Charter Council are seeking emerging leaders and organizers to help lead the planning and development of the 2024 Charter Policy Action Forum! Please see more information below and attached.

Best,

Colleen Matts

(she/her)

Director, Farm to Institution Programs

Coordinator, Michigan Farm to Institution Network

Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems

Role Context and Overview:

Since 2010, people across the state and country have gathered at the Michigan Good Food Summits to network, share, reflect, and learn about good food work happening in Michigan. The Michigan Good Food Charter Council wants to support policy action aligned with the goals and priorities of the Michigan Good Food Charter.  We hope to engage a number of food and agriculture systems stakeholders and leaders in a hands-on Policy Action Forum designed to amplify and catalyze coalition-building for good food goals.

This event will be held in-person with virtual follow-ups to continue the engagement beyond the single day.  To execute this event, we are seeking a total of six (6) Forum Leaders to support key elements of the Forum Planning Process.

You can find all the details about the leadership team in the PDF attached. If you are interested in applying to be on this leadership team, please apply here by 11/3.

Additional questions can be sent to Lindsey Scalera and Jordan Lindsay. Applications due by November 3, 2023.

As National Farm to School Month comes to a close, we wanted to share a few more farm to school opportunities!
  • Here in Michigan, the 10 Cents a Meal application is now open! This state-funded program matches what schools and other non-school sponsors spend on Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and dry beans. Grant amounts are determined by multiplying a year’s worth of meals by 10 cents. Learn more here, including about how to apply by October 30th!

  • The 2023 USDA Farm to School Census is now open! All public, charter, and private school food authorities (SFAs) that participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) in Michigan should have received an email earlier this month with a link to the Census and instructions. All SFAs are encouraged to participate, whether or not you participate in farm to school activities. Please complete this national survey to be sure that Michigan is well represented!

  • The USDA Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program is now accepting applications! This competitive grant program supports “planning, developing and implementing farm to school programs.” Apply by January 12, 2024 if you’re interested!

Deadline Extended! Director of Farm to Institution Programs

Join the MSU CRFS team!
MSU Center for Regional Food Systems seeks a full-time, fixed-term Director of Farm to Institution Programs. The application deadline for this outreach specialist position has been extended to November 6, 2023.

This Director will provide overall direction and coordinate outreach, education, research, and evaluation activities for existing and future farm to institution efforts at MSU Center for Regional Food Systems. This position provides a unique opportunity for an experienced, motivated, and resourceful leader to bring creative vision and support to the strong farm to institution foundation existing here in Michigan. The Director will work closely with partners from MSU Extension, state agencies, community-based organizations, institutions, farms and food vendors, funding agencies, and other state, regional, and national organizations.

Within this highly collaborative role, the Director will provide overall leadership for the Michigan Farm to Institution Network, including coordinating the management team and advisory committee, communications, network activities, and more. Additionally, the Director will lead and support other projects related to CRFS’ statewide and national farm to institution and farm to school strategy, such as evaluating the statewide local food incentive program 10 Cents a Meal, maintaining Michigan Farm to School resources, and providing technical assistance to Michigan-based grantees of the Lake Michigan School Food System Innovation Hub.

CRFS’s highly collaborative role in farm to institution work is well-established and requires a diplomatic leader with great organizational skills to collaboratively engage a range of existing relationships and diverse stakeholders. Using a racial equity lens in all outreach strategies, research, and communication efforts is an essential part of all CRFS programming.
