New Resource | Innovative Design Elements that Stand Out Nationwide: Michigan’s 10 Cents a Meal Program

Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems

Eight Nationally Recognized Design Elements of Michigan's 10 Cents a Meal Program

Following analysis of the national impact of 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan’s Kids and Farms (10 Cents a Meal), the National Farm to School Network and Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems are proud to share this new brief, “Innovative Design Elements that Stand Out Nationwide: Michigan’s 10 Cents a Meal Program.” This resource by Cassandra Bull of the National Farm to School Network underscores eight innovative design elements that distinguish 10 Cents a Meal as a local food purchasing incentive (LFPI) program.

Launched as a regional pilot in 2016, 10 Cents a Meal is known as one of the first LFPI programs in the country. By 2026, around 20 states and Washington, DC have adopted unique, state-funded LFPIs that reflect their distinct policy contexts, priorities, and agricultural resources.

Farm to School practitioners and advocates can use this brief to consider ways to adapt or update their state’s current LFPI program. Additionally, this resource can be used to inspire additional states or regions to implement new programs that will benefit the eaters, producers, and their local economy.
