New faces, new funding, and a new Michigan Good Food Charter | | | Friends,
This year brought a lot of newness to MSU Center for Regional Food Systems. Our team and partnerships have grown. The shared vision and roadmap detailed in the Michigan Good Food Charter has been revised. And, we have some exciting things in-the-works that we want to share with you!
Next year, we will reach 20 years of food systems work since our beginnings as the C.S. Mott Group in 2003. The vision remains constant and our commitment to our values is steadfast, but food systems work is always dynamic – changing with the communities that shape what we do. | | | | | In November, Dr. M. Jahi Chappell joined MSU as CRFS Director, W.K. Kellogg Foundation Endowed Chair in Food and Society, and Professor in the Department of Community Sustainability.
Jahi is a scholar, organizer, son of social workers, and grandson of Michigan farmers. We are so happy to have him on board! | | | | As we look forward to Jahi’s leadership, we also look back with appreciation on all that our former directors, Mike Hamm and Rich Pirog, did for CRFS. | | | | In addition to Jahi, we’ve welcomed three more people to CRFS this year:
| | | | Learn more about some partnerships that started or were renewed this year. | | | | | | USDA Risk Management Agency | A second round of support for the free farm business record keeping virtual learning series for farmers of the global majority.
| | | | | | USDA Agricultural Marketing Service | A new opportunity to work with the University of Vermont to create a toolkit of resources to support the viability of food hubs nationally.
| | | | | | Association of State Public Health Nutritionists | A third year of support for implementation of farm to early care and education activities in Michigan and use of 10 Cents a Meal funds.
| | | | | | USDA Agricultural Marketing Service | Awarded to Michigan Department of Education, CRFS is one of eight partners supporting this cooperative agreement to purchase and distribute locally grown, produced, and processed food from underserved producers.
| | | | | New Michigan Good Food Charter | The revised 2022 Michigan Good Food Charter outlines a shared vision for good food systems in Michigan with six goals, six strategies, and 22 action recommendations.
The Charter calls for systemic change by supporting food systems that:
- ensure food is accessible to everyone
- promote healthy communities
- use fair and sustainable production methods
- support a diverse and equitable society.
Save the date for the Michigan Good Food Summit on May 19, 2023 in East Lansing! | | | | | Wishing you peace and health
We are always grateful for you, our inspiring partners with whom we pursue a future where food systems are distinguished by equity, health, and sustainability. Thank you for all that you do. We wish you peace and health in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Your friends at MSU Center for Regional Food Systems | | | | In case you missed it, here are other highlights to celebrate from 2022! |

We sincerely appreciate you joining with us to address the root causes that prevent people from having equitable access to healthy, affordable, and sustainably grown food. | | | | | Your gift will support a thriving economy, equity, and sustainability for Michigan, the nation, and the planet by advancing systems that produce food that is healthy, green, fair, and affordable. | | | | Forward this message to your networks!
