Re: The Permaculture and Sustainability Across America 2012 Bicycle Tour

Hello friends,

You know that at Common Circle Education, we're busy changing
the world -- and we take our responsibility as the nation's
leadership, sustainable living and permaculture school
seriously. Today we're announcing our most powerful program
yet - a cross-country permaculture design course on bike.

More details @ http://commoncircle.com/cross-country-bicycle-tour

Come ride your bicycle with us across the country learning
about and promoting sustainability and permaculture. Our most
powerful program yet - a supported cross-country tour (support
vehicle, meals and lodging included) to farms and
sustainability sites, integrated with our award-winning
permaculture design and regenerative leadership certification
and much more -- this program will change your life.

This three-month intensive course combines our Urban
Permaculture and Regenerative Leadership Certificate training,
followed by a Wilderness First Aid training before we head on
the road cycling from Eugene, Oregon all the way across
America to Washington DC (we'll be roughly following the
TransAM bike route – about 4200 miles), promoting and
learning about sustainable living and intentional communities.
The stunning places you will visit on this program and the
extraordinary people you will meet will challenge and inspire
you..

Who: You and your neighbors who care about a sustainable
future for America. As always, all of our programs are
designed for beginner and intermediate cyclists.

Where: Eugene, Oregon to Washington, DC

When: June 1 - August 31, 2012

Program cost: $6000 regular rate
pay just $4500 before September 1st
payment plans available

More details @ http://commoncircle.com/cross-country-bicycle-tour

This program is about sustainable community living –
through the extensive training and preparation, the group will
form a self-contained community on wheels that will cycle
across the nation learning and promoting sustainable living.
Because all of our programs are always designed for beginner
and intermediate cyclists, we will teach you how to fix your
own flats, fundamentals of bicycle mechanics, wilderness first
aid, many safe bicycle touring skills, and provide you with
the best possible routes. The permaculture training at the
start of the course will give you a very thorough foundation
in sustainable community design. Our experienced program
co-facilitators will help facilitate the entire program,
holding the community container and sharing their experience
and guidance along the way — but otherwise serving
primarily as members of the community.

Here are some quick facts about this program:

--> Includes our Urban Permaculture Design and Regenerative
Leadership Certification training
--> Includes our Oregon Sustainability in Motion Bike Tour
--> Includes a Wilderness First Aid certification training!
--> We will be following the TransAM route – roughly 4000 miles.
--> Average of 60 miles per day (~4-8 hours per day) with
rest/service days roughly once per week
--> This is a supported tour – a vehicle carries all the gear.
--> Meals are included – organic and vegan ingredients and
menu will be provided, group members take turns cooking
--> Experienced and knowledgeable tour support staff team
will cycle with the group.
--> Camping accommodations for most of the program

Aside from the amazing places you will visit on this course,
the most inspiring and transformational aspect of this program
is undoubtedly the incredible community that will form
throughout the course. The depth and richness of dialogue of
each of our programs naturally leads to friendships and
relationships that last well past the expedition itself.
We've often heard comments from participants who mention
that they have never experienced community the way that they
have during a Common Circle Education program.

Sustainability in Motion Bicycle Tour to Organic Farms and Ecovillages

Hello friends,

How would you like to spend a week riding your bike to organic
farms, learning about permaculture, community, and sustainable food
production and participating in incredible service projects ?

We invite you to join our annual Sustainability in Motion Cycling
Tour in Oregon or California.

--> More info @ http://commoncircle.com/sim

[Sign up before July 16th and bring a friend or lover FREE!]

Whether because of the fabulous sustainability education or
because they discovered their passion and ability for biking,
numerous previous participants call their Sustainability in Motion
experience one of the most profound, life-altering experiences
of their entire lives.

"I made some of my best friends on this course. The hosts provide
such an enriching vision of the world and it's such a relief to
be on a course with people you can really connect with off the bat"
- David B, 2005/2006 participant

Intentionally designed for beginner and intermediate cyclists, this
experiential sustainability program is often the first cycle tour
for many of our participants. The stunning places you will see on
this program and the extraordinary people you will meet will
challenge and inspire you.

Throughout this week-long program you will take part in a wide range
of educational hands-on activities. You'll see family organic
farms, learning how your food is grown, what it means for
something to be organic, and why it's absolutely critical
to support local organic farmers. You will also cycle to model eco-
villages and intentional communities where you will learn all about
the challenges and gifts of choosing to live in community. Along
the way, we will make stops at green businesses and cooperatives,
demonstrating the power of community economics.

FoodCorps Announces AmeriCorps Grant in Service of Healthier Children

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 20, 2011

Contact:  Colleen Matts, C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems

matts@msu.edu, 517.432.0310

FoodCorps Announces AmeriCorps Grant in Service of Healthier Children
MSU's Mott Group to Host Six FoodCorps Members

NEW YORK CITY – The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded FoodCorps $625,000 to support 50 AmeriCorps members serving at 42 sites in 10 states to increase vulnerable children's knowledge of, engagement with, and access to healthy food. The first class of members will serve in Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Oregon. Working under the direction of Michigan's partner organization, the C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems (Mott Group) at Michigan State University, Michigan's six FoodCorps members will conduct nutrition education, build and tend school gardens, and expand farm to cafeteria sourcing of healthy food at the Michigan Land Use Institute, YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, Food System Economic Partnership, and the Crim Fitness Foundation.

"We are eager to host the first cohort of Michigan FoodCorps members. After training in late August, the six members will report to their service sites in both urban and rural areas to dig in and get started," said Colleen Matts, FoodCorps Supervisor with the Mott Group. "The work of Michigan's FoodCorps members will contribute directly to meeting some of the goals of the Michigan Good Food Charter. Building partnerships with local organizations and community members will be critical to the success of our members."

This inaugural year as an AmeriCorps grantee will allow FoodCorps to apply a model of national service proven effective by Teach for America, City Year and Habitat for Humanity to the pressing problems of healthy food access, childhood obesity and diet-related disease. "Service through AmeriCorps is an essential part of the solution to many of the social challenges facing our nation," said Curt Ellis, executive director of FoodCorps. "The program will at once serve families in need, improving access to healthy, affordable school meals, while also serving its AmeriCorps members: training a cadre of young leaders for careers in public health, food, and agriculture."

The current year's AmeriCorps grant cycle was highly competitive. Organizations requested nearly twice the number of grant dollars and AmeriCorps positions that could be funded. "I congratulate this year's grantees for rising to the top in a highly competitive year," said John Gomperts, Director of AmeriCorps. "These organizations will increase their reach and impact on meeting local needs through the infusion of dedicated AmeriCorps members." Nationally, AmeriCorps engages 80,000 Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Its members serve through more than 14,000 nonprofit and faith-based organizations in rural and urban communities throughout the nation.

ABOUT FOODCORPS:

FoodCorps is a nonprofit national service organization that seeks to reverse childhood obesity by increasing vulnerable children's knowledge of, engagement with, and access to healthy food. The centerpiece of our work is an AmeriCorps public service program that recruits young leaders for a year of service in high-obesity, limited-resource communities of need. Service members build and tend school gardens, conduct hands-on nutrition education, and facilitate Farm to School programming that brings high quality local food into public schools. The program serves vulnerable children, improving access to healthy, affordable school meals, and trains a cadre of leaders for careers in food and agriculture. FoodCorps is made possible by the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service (AmeriCorps), the Woodcock Foundation, the Claneil Foundation, the Wallace Genetic Foundation, and anonymous private donors. www.foodcorps.org .

ABOUT AMERICORPS

AmeriCorps is a national service program administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Members tutor and mentor youth, expand health services, build affordable housing, run after-school programs, support veterans, help communities respond to disasters, and recruit and train volunteers. Interested individuals can learn about available opportunities and apply online by visiting AmeriCorps.gov.

fields of permaculture, natural farming, sustainable landscaping
and local food production. Larry is the primary instructor for
Common Circle Education Oregon Permaculture Design and Regenerative
Leadership Trainings.

After completing his BA degree in Asian Studies at University of
California Berkeley, Larry traveled to Japan to see first hand
what life was like in Asia. He lived and worked on communes and
traditional farms in the Japanese countryside. Among other rural
farms, Larry spent several years with Masanobu Fukuoka, a farmer
and philosopher, on Shikoku Island. Mr. Fukuoka developed a
special no-till way of farming to demonstrate the practical value
of his spiritual principles. Larry returned to the United States
