10 Cents a Meal Restored in 2019-2020 Budget

Friends,
10 Cents a Meal for Michigan's Kids & Farms was restored in the 2019-2020 Michigan budget. The governor signed the budget on Friday.  The funding is for eligible schools in the same regions that were eligible last year, about half the counties in the state (Prosperity Regions 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9.)  It's not statewide expansion yet, but it preserves the program's infrastructure and affirms the state's value of supporting our schools in purchasing locally grown produce for our children in school meals. In fact, the bill's language removed the word "pilot" from "pilot project."  The funding is for grants that match receipts up to 10 cents per meal showing local purchasing of fruits, vegetables, and dry beans in the fiscal and school year of 2019-2020 The Michigan Department of Education will have more news for schools soon.

To see how remarkable it is that 10 Cents a Meal was restored at a time of dire state cuts, see this Senate Fiscal Analaysis of the supplemental that just passed. Look at the table.

And, as a reminder, every seat in the Michigan House is up for election this year and some races will be decided in the August 4 primary that is tomorrow. You can make sure your candidates for the Michigan House are aware of 10 Centd a Meal by educating them in seconds with this email tool: groundworkcenter.org/educateyourcandidate

Thanks so much,
Diane
