Cultivate Michigan Marketplace in Kalamazoo, MI on January 12 This networking event is an opportunity for farmers, food suppliers, and institutional food service buyers to connect around local food.  Register by December 30, 2022 to attend the Cultivate Michigan Marketplace Kalamazoo! These regional marketplace events are unique in that they focus on meeting the needs of institutional food service buyers by networking with farmers and local food suppliers to find the right fit. Who should participate?  10 Cents a Meal grantees in Southwest Michigan and schools and ECE sites interested in applying to participate in 10 Cents a Meal in the future.  Other institutional food service buyers - including schools, hospitals, colleges, senior facilities - interested in purchasing local food products from farmers and vendors in their region.   Farmers and food suppliers interested in selling local foods to institutional food buyers in the region. Farmers, food hubs, processors and distributors of any scale are welcome. Not all institutions use products developed by food makers (such as pre-made desserts, canned salsa, etc.), so it is important to consider if your products are right for a Marketplace event.  How the event works:  It’s a mix between speed-dating and a trade show! Each event is regional in scope and intended for institutional buyers, farmers, and food suppliers of all scales. At the event, institutional buyers will be stationed at tables around the room, and suppliers will rotate to meet with buyers of their choice. Light refreshments will be provided along with plenty of time to mix and mingle! This event is free to attend, but space is limited and registration is required. Understanding the impact of the WKKF Farm to ECE Procurement Pilot Program

Increasing access to local foods and incorporating gardening activities, nutrition education

Procurement Pilot Boosts Participation in Michigan Farm to Early Care and Education Activities  Through funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems supported a procurement pilot to help Early Care and Education (ECE) providers obtain locally-grown food from a variety of sources, as well as encourage providers to self-assess their experience in the program. Pre- and post-assessments distributed to the 33 participating sites gauged the impact and satisfaction in the four-year pilot program.  The results shared in this report show that the three core elements of Farm to ECE, increasing healthy local food access; providing gardening opportunities; and offering nutrition and agricultural education, are supportive-not exclusive-the implementation.   This resource can be used to inform future Farm to ECE practices for providers, coaching and professional development for organizations, and evaluation efforts in Michigan and other states.   Explore and share this resource with your networks!  From Seed to Harvest: Summary of Michigan Procurement Pilot  For more information, contact: Meagan K. Bringing the Farm to School: A Training for Agricultural Producers to Sell to School Markets Farmers, this education opportunity for farmers is designed to provide the training and tools to build your capacity to launch or grow efforts to market to schools.
