In addition to increasing local foods on the menu, a nutrition education initiative is helping them learn more about the food they are eating and where it came from, as well as its nutritional benefits.
| | | | | Dexter Community Schools Part of "5 Healthy Towns" Project | As part of a multi-community wellness initiative, Dexter Community Schools is encouraging students to eat healthy with a farm to school program.
| | | | | Secondary Students Summer Project Presented at City Hall Meeting | A small scale urban agriculture program for students yielded big results during a presentation to the City of Victoria City Hall. Students shared their experiences gaining work experience credit and how the garden has been a source of fresh produce for the cafeteria.
| | | | | Native Farm to School Champion Stories | National Farm to School Network partnered with the Intertribal Agriculture Council to share a series of blogs profiling Native Farm to School Champions. Learn about the Karuk Tribe’s food system education initiatives and Hardin School District’s work to connect students with traditional foods.
| | | | Webinar: Building Partnerships to Support Food Sovereignty in African American Communities | December 3 3:00 PM EST
This webinar is an opportunity to explore how and why African American communities are working together to enhance their food sovereignty. Speakers include Malik Yakini with the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, Lilly Fink Shapiro with the University of Michigan’s Sustainable Food Systems Initiative, and Kimberly Carr, a post-doctoral research associate in food sovereignty and racial equity at the Center for Regional Food Systems and Center for Interdisciplinarity at Michigan State University.
| | | | | New Book About School Food | The Labor of Lunch: Why We Need Real Food and Real Jobs in American Public Schools by Jennifer Gaddis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison explores food service in public schools, including scratch cooking and local food sourcing.
| | | | Created by the U.S. Food Sovereignty Alliance, Food Sovereignty Stories is a series of videos from social movements in the United States working towards a more just and sustainable food system. These films will help viewers understand food sovereignty and what it looks like in different communities across the United States.
| | | | Child Poverty Rates Data from Annie E. Casey Foundation | | | USDA Farm to School Grant Applications Open | Deadline: December 13, 2019
The USDA Office of Community Food Systems will award grants ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 to schools, nonprofits, state and local agencies, agricultural producers, and Indian tribal organizations in 2020. Applications are due December 13, indicating the plans and activities for implementation of farm to school activities.
| | | | 2020 Youth Gardening Grant | Deadline: December 16, 2019
Any nonprofit organization, public or private school, or youth program in the United States or US Territories planning a new garden program or expanding an established one that serves at least 15 youth between the ages of 3 and 18 is eligible to apply. Winners are selected based on demonstrated program impact and sustainability.
| | | | Applications for USDA Regional Farm to School Institutes Grants Open | Deadline: December 27, 2019
The USDA Office of Community Food Systems announced the new Regional Farm to School Institute Grant Request for Applications, a new grant for fiscal year 2020 intended to support the creation and dissemination of information on farm to school program development, provide practitioner education and training with ongoing school year coaching, and technical assistance.
| | | | Scholarships Available for the 2020 National Child Nutrition Conference | Deadline: January 16, 2020
The National Child Nutrition Conference is offering scholarships for participants to learn more about the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and Afterschool Meals. The conference will be held April 14-16, 2020 in Atlanta, GA.
| | | | Communications Intern, National Farm to School Network | Deadline: December 6, 2019
National Farm to School Network seeks a Communications Intern to support content development and dissemination of information and resources to NFSN stakeholders. As a member of the Communications team, the Communications Intern will work closely with NFSN staff and partners, gaining hands-on experience in digital media and farm to school programming. This is a remote position, working approximately 10 hours per week for twelve months.

The Health Team Assistant will work with TBAISD's Farm to School and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) programs to change the culture of nutrition and wellness in elementary school communities.
