Deadline Extended to 9/14: Farm to Institution Food Safety Survey
Do you purchase fresh produce for an institution or know someone who does? Please consider taking and/or sharing a survey about food safety requirements for suppliers at the following link: https://bit.ly/2IFB3Xl All of the questions are in multiple choice format and the survey will take an estimated time of 7 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous and participation is completely voluntary. The survey will be open through September 14, 2020.
A team of educators from Michigan State University Extension, in partnership with Fresh Systems, LLC., Michigan Food and Farming Systems, and the Wallace Center at Winrock International have developed a national survey about institutional food safety programs to inform educational initiatives for fresh produce buyers. The aim of this survey is to gather data on accepted food safety verification programs for fresh produce, awareness of the program’s requirements for farms, and confidence in these verification programs.

Employment opportunity: application due by 9.1.2020
I am seeking candidates for a full-time position as Resident Farmer at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. The hospital has its own hiring process but I am looking to make a recommendation. Please review the attached job description. The job description will need to change and probably will be reviewed before the actual hiring process begins. I can't guarantee pay rate. I was payed $22/hr. I suggest you negotiate hard to achieve a pay rate of at least $30/hr plus benefits at a minimum.
If you do not have an applicable degree in horticulture or associated field demonstrate your success and experience in your cover letter and resume. HFHS has little to no vision as to how the greenhouse and the associated programs serve their larger healthcare goals. Those that demonstrate their own vision will probably be preferred by the system.

GRANT DEADLINE: The Michigan Department of Education notified grantees from all three years of the program that they have until 8 a.m.August 31 to say if they want to participate in the new, fourth round that was funded by the recent state budget supplemental and, if so, to provide receipts showing their local purchases from September 1, 2019 to September 1, 2020.
- If you work with any of these districts or with any farmers, food hubs, or other local produce businesses who may want to sell produce to them this month, you may want to reach out to see if you can offer assistance.
- You can find the list of grantees for each year in the annual legislative reports here.
SIGN-ON LETTER DEADLINE: The state held its Revenue Estimating Conference this week, which leads to development of the new budget for fiscal year 2021 by October 1 — just over a month away.
- A sign-on letter is being circulated by Groundwork and others with the intent of sending it to the governor and key legislslators when the legislature reconvenes next week. .
- If you already signed it, do you know someone who hasn't with whom you could share it? We want to be as complete as possible. (The letter, FYI, is the same content as it was before the supplemental funding but updated. If you signed before, you do not need to sign again - you're in!)

10 Cents a Meal for Michigan's Kids & Farms is a state of Michigan matching grant program that supports schools in purchasing locally grown fruits, vegetables, and dry beans. Since 2016, it has been available to schools in about half of the state's counties. Schools, farmers, and health advocates across the state are hoping this program will be expanded statewide for equitable access for all of Michigan's children.

Save the Date for Michigan Apple Crunch on October 8 (or any day in October)!
We recognize that this year may be different for many of our schools and other institutions who have typically participated in the Apple Crunch. Given the circumstances, we are still proceeding with the crunch this year as planned and are offering lots of options for Michigan institutions, children, and residents to celebrate the Michigan apple harvest wherever you may be located come October 8th. We will also be sharing lots of resources to create activities and lessons to highlight the bounty of Michigan’s apple season. Busy August: 10 Cents a Meal Updates
Greetings Friends,
I have two updates and one resource for you regarding 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan's Kids & Farms.
UPDATE #1: Last week, the Michigan Department of Education notified grantees from all three years of the program that they have until 8 a.m.August 31 to say if they want to participate in the new, fourth round that was funded by the recent state budget supplemental and, if so, to provide receipts showing their local purchases from September 1, 2019 to September 1, 2020.
