October is National Farm to School Month!

Look inside for Farm to School resources and events

Over the remaining weeks of October, we will continue to celebrate National Farm to School Month. This year’s theme, “Who’s at the Table?”, acknowledges and celebrates the many people who are involved in bringing food to the table.  There are many ways to observe National Farm to School Month, including celebrating with events like the Michigan Apple Crunch. Visit the National Farm to School Network’s (NFSN) Farm to School Month page for resources such as fact sheets, posters, and a toolkit for inspiration. Register for NFSN’s Movement Meeting on October 27th, featuring speakers from across the country sharing how they have strengthened their leadership and built power in their communities through farm to school and ECE efforts. If you haven’t already, register your Michigan Apple Crunch event bit.ly/MIAppleCrunch2022 for October 13th, or any date in October. Sand County Foundation would like to announce that grants for the High School Pollinator Habitat Program 2022-2023 school year are available, and we are currently accepting applications through November 18th.

Below is language encouraging high school teachers to apply. Would you be willing to forward the invitation to interested high school science, outdoor education, or agricultural education teachers in MN, WI, IL, IA, & MI?

Sand County Foundation is now accepting proposals from high school teachers for pollinator habitat grants! This competitive grant program gives students hands-on experience growing native forbs indoors and establishing pollinator habitat. Successful applicants will receive prairie seeds and seedlings, an orientation and consultation, and $1,000 to support project expenses. The deadline for proposals is November 18th, 2022.

To be eligible you must be a high school teacher, have access to a suitable indoor growing area, identify a site (working/agricultural lands preferred), and be located in Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, or Wisconsin.

Virtual Field Trip to Clearview Dairy Farm on 10/13!

Join Milk Means More on October 13, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. for a 30-minute live tour of Clearview Dairy Farm in western Michigan. Farmer Brian will show where the calves and cows live and how cows are milked.

 

Teachers can register to join the tour through Zoom and will receive updates and reminders. The virtual farm tour will also be live streamed on Facebook and YouTube. Visit Milk Means More for more information.

Join Milk Means More on September 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. for a 45-minute live tour of Siegler Dairy Farm in Michigan. Farmer Kip will discuss how he takes care of the cows, calves, land and community. Students will see the full crop cycle, from planting to harvest, along with the tractors and equipment used on the farm.

New Farm to ECE Survey briefs available now The National Farm to School Network and Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems are happy to share two new research briefs in our series from the 2021 National Farm to Early Care and Education Survey: Participation and Practices Why Farm to ECE   These briefs focus on farm to ECE practices, as well as motivations and barriers to participation. Farm to ECE practitioners, partners, and supporters can use these resources to start conversations and build awareness among their networks.  Why Farm to ECE? The top motivations for starting and continuing with farm to ECE included: improving children’s health, providing children with experiential learning, supporting local farmers and local economy, and teaching children where food comes from and how it’s grown. Join the MI Good Food Charter Council & Summit Planning Committee!

Hello everyone!

The Michigan Good Food Charter Council and Summit Planning Committees are seeking committee members from a diverse set of cross-sector food system perspectives and backgrounds!

The 2022 Michigan Good Food Charter was developed through a multi-year collaborative process involving representatives from over 150 Michigan agriculture, food, health, education, and governmental organizations. Now that the updated Charter has been published, we are re-establishing our coordination body to support the implementation of the Charter recommendations and planning for a summit for next year.

We are seeking nominees for the following committees that will make up the MI Good Food Charter Council:

• Coordinating Committee - help us decide how we work together

This committee will design membership, governance, decision-making processes, and outreach and engagement methods that support the implementation of the Michigan Good Food Charter over the next 5-10 years. 

• Policy Action Working Group - help develop a statewide food policy voice 

This working group will help develop a policy prioritization process, identifying existing policy action leaders and helping build a coalition around policy action related to the charter. 

 

• Shared Measurement Committee - help measure progress toward our collective vision

This committee will complete the selection of long-term indicators of progress and help develop the plan to gather data and share progress toward our vision and results statements.

We are also seeking nominees for the:

• Summit Planning Committee - Help set the stage for another successful 10 years of good food in Michigan.

      We plan to host a hybrid virtual/in-person summit in early spring of 2023. The theme is tentatively, "making Michigan good food work!" We are seeking planning       committee members to help us design this very interactive and exciting event which will serve as the "hard launch" for the 2022 Michigan Good Food Charter. 

      We welcome both previous committee members as well as new folks!
