Webinar July 18, 2024, 1 - 2 pm ET

Learn how you can increase food access by transforming dining hall leftovers into single-serve, frozen meals for your campus or community food pantry in this one-hour webinar from FINE, Food for Free, and Harvard University Dining Services. Molly Hansen from Food For Free and Crista Martin from Harvard University Dining Services share how their organizations' partnership created a program that produces thousands of single-serve meals annually. Register Here

(NEW) SAVE THE DATE - 2024 Michigan Apple Crunch on October 17, 2024

The Michigan Farm to Institution Network will be hosting the 12th annual Crunch on Thursday, October 17th. Last year, more than 250,000 people participated in The Crunch at their local school, hospital, business, organization or from their own home. The Michigan Apple Crunch is a statewide event that promotes local food and farm to school programs by encouraging as many people as possible to "crunch" into a juicy Michigan Apple. Though the event is primarily focused on K-12 school participation, we encourage any large or small institutions, businesses or organizations to register for the event and join in the fun. The Michigan Apple Crunch is a collaborative promotional program of the Michigan Farm to Institution Network. MFIN is coordinated by the Center for Regional Food Systems with support from MSU Extension. Sharing for all those who might be interested in learning more about the National Farm to School Network Racial Equity Learning Lab.  This webinar will be informational but applications for the upcoming fall Racial Equity Learning Lab cohort are due July 15th. More information on the cohort here: 

The second round of NFSN's Racial Equity Learning Lab Applicaiton is out. In partnership with the U.S Department of Agriculture Food Nutrition Service, the National Farm to School Network (NFSN) is implementing the Racial Equity Learning Lab (the "Lab") to advance racial equity within the farm to school movement. The Lab is a collaborative and virtual space designed for small groups to foster an intensive dialogue and co-creation experience focused on equity in farm to school.

Apply by July 10: Farm to School Leadership Academy

Good morning, everyone.

 

I wanted to pass along some information about a national Farm to School learning opportunity – the Farm to School Leadership Academy.

 

This will be a year-long community of learning to support you in transforming school food systems. The Farm to School Leadership Academy brings together leaders and aspiring leaders who are dedicated to food systems education and committed to healing these systems in schools and early childhood settings. Participants will explore principles of transformational leadership, systems change, and community support to enhance and strengthen their ongoing farm to school efforts.

Who should apply? The program is best suited for educators, coordinators, and leaders working in farm to school and food education in preK-12 settings. Priority will be given to those working in public school systems.

 

Important Dates

• Applications Due: Wednesday, July 10, 2024
• Fall 2024: Virtual welcome and orientation session in October, date to be determined
• November 13-15 2024: Program begins with a two-day retreat at Shelburne Farms in Vermont.
• Winter 2024-25: Two virtual group sessions
• Spring 2025: Second in-person retreat in North Carolina, details to be announced.
• Spring 2025: Final virtual gathering

 

Apply today! The Farm to School Leadership Academy is a partnership between National Farm to School Network, Shelburne Farms, Center for Environmental Farming Systems, and North Carolina State University. It is funded at least in part by US Department of Agriculture.

Save the Date! 2024 Michigan Apple Crunch on October 17, 2024 The Michigan Farm to Institution Network is excited to announce the date for the 2024 Michigan Apple Crunch! This year we will be hosting the 12th annual Crunch on Thursday, October 17th. Last year, more than 250,000 people participated in The Crunch at their local school, hospital, business, organization or from their own home. Be sure to mark the Crunch on your calendars for this year and help us reach the 2024 goal of 350,000 Crunchers in Michigan.  The Michigan Apple Crunch is a statewide event that promotes local food and farm to school programs by encouraging as many people as possible to “crunch” into a juicy Michigan Apple. Though the event is primarily focused on K-12 school participation, we encourage any large or small institutions, businesses or organizations to register for the event and join in the fun. Michigan is a top-three apple producing state and the Crunch is a great way to introduce students or employees to the benefits of local sourcing and local apples.  Look for the Crunch registration to be released in August, along with the 2024 Crunch Guide and many more resources for making this year’s Crunch the best one yet. Melanie -- There's a real possibility that funding for 10 Cents a Meal could be cut in half in the FY2025 state budget. We need your help to help save full funding. Please send our Action Alert letter contacting state legislators to let them know that Michigan's children and farmers need lawmakers to stand strong and push for funding equal to the past two years. 10 Cents a Meal has provided healthy food to hundreds of thousands of children and provided business for hundreds of family farms and food distributors, processors, packers, and food hubs. The program is respected nationally, and a number of states have modeled their programs on 10 Cents a Meal. 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan's Kids and Farms is Michigan's local food incentive program implemented by the Michigan Department of Education. The program provides schools, early care and education centers, and other organizations participating in USDA Child Nutrition programs with match funding up to 10 cents per meal to purchase and serve Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and dry beans. Ask legislators to pass funding equal to FY2023 and FY2024 in Section 31j of the FY 2025 School Aid Budget, so 10 Cents a Meal can continue to put nutritiously rich and vibrant locally grown food on children's plates statewide and help family farms economically thrive.  Please click over to our Action Alert web page and use our letter template to personalize and email your message now.
