This webinar will help you get beyond the basics and describe strategies and examples of how to adapt your school menu based on Michigan fruit and vegetable availability. This is also a great opportunity to dive deep into resources from the recent Making Michigan Recipes Work training.

 

Participants will be introduced to the new Making Michigan Recipes Work resources from MSU Extension and Cultivate Michigan that can help in planning a menu that matches Michigan's growing seasons.

Petoskey, MI - Groundwork Center Seeks Local Food Coordinator

The Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities is seeking a Local Food Coordinator with strong outreach, organizing, and communication skills, who is eager to help support the advancement of the local food & farming economy in northern Michigan, specifically, in Antrim, Charlevoix, and Emmet counties, as well as the surrounding area. 

The ideal candidate is a flexible, innovative, and engaging individual who is at home in business, community, and governmental settings; understands the economic, social, and policy basics of farm to school and food access programs; and has a strong passion for local food and farming issues, protecting our environment, and building resilient communities.

The Local Food Coordinator will:

  • Work with the local food and farming program director and an advisory committee to identify and advance key local food and farming initiatives in the Northern Farms Foodshed;
  • Support a burgeoning farm to school movement through engagement with local farmers, school administrators, teachers, parents and other stakeholders;
  • Oversee the expansion of the local FoodCorps program, including supporting additional schools in their efforts to source local food for their school lunch programs, integrating farm to school activities with curriculum, and supporting school gardens;
  • Support regional food pantries in their efforts to offer more healthful, local food to all members of our community;
  • And, serve as a community liaison by working collaboratively with other individuals and organizations advancing the local food and farming economy throughout the Northern Farms Foodshed. 

Professional Requirements

Candidates for this position must have a bachelor's degree or higher level of educational attainment. The candidate must demonstrate:

  • Experience with and/or deep knowledge of local food and farming systems, strategies, and economics;
  • Ability to write persuasive opinion pieces, marketing materials, and reports;
  • Organizing skills that motivate, guide, and engage citizens, businesspeople, and officials around local food and farming issues;
  • Capacity to raise donor and grant funds;
  • And, excellent relationship building, outreach, and self-organizing skills. 

Personal Qualifications 

The Local Food Coordinator works closely with a highly qualified team of policy analysts, advocates, and communicators. Among the qualities we seek in successful candidates are a: 

  • Strong commitment to the Groundwork Center's mission and programs; 
  • Thorough understanding of and enthusiasm for local food and farming and resiliency principles; 
  • Strong interpersonal communication and teamwork skills; 
  • Proven ability to organize multiple projects simultaneously with keen attention to detail, deadlines, and objectives; 
  • Self-directed working approach and initiative; 
  • Spirit of an engaged advocate, rather than a detached analyst; 
  • Strong interpersonal public speaking, communication, and teamwork skills; 
  • Professional and pleasant demeanor; 
  • And, sense of humor and positive outlook. 

Compensation, Benefits, and Application Procedure 

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary range, depending on experience. The position will be based in Petoskey, MI with moderate amounts of short-term regional travel required. Full-time employees and their families qualify for the Groundwork Center's full health insurance coverage. They also receive retirement benefits, ample vacation, and schedules flexible enough to enjoy the wondrous forests, clean rivers, and the magnificent Great Lakes shoreline that distinguish our region.

This is the fourth segment of the 2016-2017 Farm to ECE Mini-Webinar Series. This series consists of 12 webinars that will cover various topics in Farm to ECE. Webinars will be 15 minutes of presented material with time for questions and answers following, and will be archived on the MSU CRFS website.

 

Many early childhood programs want to strengthen local community connections, support local economies, and build in educational opportunities through working directly with farmers to source local food. This webinar will cover the basics of purchasing directly from a farmer for early childhood program including how to find farmers, rules and regulations, and strategies for creating successful partnerships. The webinar will include examples from Michigan of early childhood programs that have successfully built relationships with local farmers, and give other programs ideas for getting started!

This series is designed for early childhood program staff including food service directors, cook staff, administration, teachers, and family day care home providers, and can also be beneficial for those seeking to support farm to ECE efforts.

The Michigan Cherry Slurp is a one day event highlighting one of Michigan's most well-known agricultural products – tart cherries!

What better way to start another year of farm to school than by planning your own Cherry Slurp! See details below on the upcoming Michigan Cherry Slurp (released this week!). If you need some farm to school motivation in the winter, celebrating cherries in all their frozen and dried glory is a great way to keep your programming going all year long.

o    This annual event will feature over 30 educational courses, panels and breakout sessions.

·         Betsie Valley Elementary fuels up for school healthMSU Extension

o    Betsie Valley will send students, teachers, and principal to a day-long rally for healthy school eating and physical activity. The team chose farm to school as their healthy eating play!

 

School Garden Resources

In lieu of the December Michigan School Garden Newsletter, I wanted to pass on some opportunities to financially support your school gardens. See below for a list of available grants!

·         American Honda Foundation - Due dates three times per year, next one is August 1

o    Schools, nonprofits classified as 501(c) (3) s and private or public schools (elementary and secondary) are eligible.

o    Award range: $20,000 - $75,000 for one year

·         !Captain Planet FoundationDue January 31st for spring and summer projects

o    Schools and organizations that have an annual operating budget of less than $3 million are eligible to apply. Projects should be performed by youth and have real environmental outcomes.

o    Award range is between $500 and $2,500.

·         The Home Depot FoundationCommunity Impact Grants currently open

o    Schools and 501(c) (3) organizations are eligible.

o    Awards are up to $5,000

o    The Home Depot also has opportunities to match donations from local stores with nonprofits. Follow this link for more information on how to request a match. 

·         Project Produce Fruit and Veggie Grants for Schoolsdistributed on a rolling basis

o    Any district or independent school participating in the National School Lunch Program is eligible.

o    Must be submitted by district food service director.

o    These grants are $2,500 and can assist with offering educational activities in the lunchroom, encouraging students to try new veggies and fruits.

·         Youth Micro-grants through Karma for Cara FoundationRolling deadline

o    Youth under age 18 who are working on a community service project (including school and community gardens).

o    Awards are between $250 - $1,000.

2017 School Nutrition Foundation Equipment Grants

Greetings MI Farm to School Network!

 

I hope you all had a wonderful end to 2016, and that your 2017 is starting off well-rested. I wanted to get this out before the Friday newsletter as the deadline is approaching! Please see below for information on the 2017 School Nutrition Foundation Equipment Grants. These grants are funded through Winston Industries and Baxter Equipment and the applications will START being accepted next Tuesday, January 10! However, only the first 50 applications will be considered, so be prepared to submit early. If equipment is that limiting factor in See below for more information:

 

 

Get a Head Start on Your Equipment Grant Application!

The School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) will start accepting online applications for the equipment grants at 11:00 am Eastern Time on Tuesday, January 10.

2017 SNF Equipment Grants include:

    Winston Industries Equipment Grant: awards 10 pieces of equipment to one school district

    Baxter Equipment for Education Grant: awards one mini rotating rack convention oven and a $500 scholarship to the winning school nutrition director

Only the first 50 submitted online applications will be considered for each grant—so be sure to prepare your application as soon as possible!
